Birding Lough Atalia
Lough Atalia is a tidal Estuary close to the centre of Galway City. Although it is tidal, approximately 80% of the water in the estuary remains at low tide. It is almost one kilometre log and approximately 400 meters wide. There is a public footpath along the East side of the Lough. You can also walk along the water’s edge for most of the time. Approximately half way along the Lough there are the remnants of allotments.
The Lough attracts gulls, waders, ducks, swans as well as finches, chats and others. It is possible to walk around the Lough. At the Northerly end of the Lough you can turn off Lough Atalia Road onto College Road. There is free parking available here.
