Courtmacsherry Estuary
Courtmacsherry Estuary in West Cork extends Timoleague village to Courtmacsherry for a distance of five kilometres. This is a beautiful part of West Cork and well worth the times needed to explore the area. The estuary starts near Timoleague village where the Argideen River flows into the estuary. There is a spectacular ruin of a medieval Abbey at this point which is over 700 years old. You can park near the Abbey and walk to Courtmacsherry (10 Kilometres Round Trip) or if you are not feeling so energetic, there are a couple of places that you can park.
This is a tidal estuary and at low tide, large expanses of sand and mudflats are revealed. This is a huge attraction for hungry birds and in winter you can expect to see large numbers of waders, waterfowl and divers. It is not unusual for rate divers and gulls to be seen in winter.
