Bird Watching Louth
Salterstown Pier
Salterstown Pier in County Louth is about two and a half kilometres from Annagassan Port in County Louth. It is a small pier where you could launch a small boat or go swimming at high tide. Enjoy the view across the sea to the Coolie Mountains and the Mourne Mountains, which is stunning, especially on a sunny day.
At low tide, large expanses of flat stoney beach and rocky shoreline is exposed. The tide goes out quite far so you will need a good pair of walking shoes or boots to negotiate the rough terrain. Watch out for slippery patches of seaweed. The area has a wide mix of gulls , terns and shore birds in summer. I plan to go back in winter as it looks like an attractive feeding area for waders and wildfowl.
You can walk the beach in both directions or do the same on the road (it is a minor road and very quiet). The hedgerows and fields have a mix of finches and chats.
There is a Google Pin showing the location if you search for “Salterstown Pier”. There is a parking area beside the pier. Sat Nav co-ordinates are 53.87766, -6.30101
Salterstown Pier is less than a five minute drive from Annagassan
