Birding Kerry

If you are thinking of going bird watching in County Kerry, you should add Blennerville to your list of birding locations. Blennerville is a small village just outside the town of Tralee that is famous for a working windmill that was built in 1800. It also has  where the River Lee meets the sea. As an added bonus it has two attractions for birding enthusiasts.

The River Lee enters the Atlantic Ocean at Blennerville. In addition, there is a canal that flows by the village that was used in the in the 19th century to allow ships bring their cargo to Tralee. Proximity to the ocean and the canal means that the area around the village is a haven for many types of birds.

When you arrive into the village coming from Tralee, you will cross a bridge over the river. Conveniently, there is a public car-park on your left hand side. You can walk back across the bridge and turn right, This will give you access to the river on one side of the road, and the canal on the other side.

When you return, don’t go back across the bridge. Keep to your right and follow the canal. This will bring you to a rocky beach area with access to sea birds. There is also access  to fields and hedges where you can see finches and chats.
