Birding Dublin
Booterstown Marsh Blackrock
Booterstown Marsh is is a popular birding site in Blackrock, County Dublin. It is now an official nature reserve managed by An Taisce. This is a saltwater marsh adjacent to Sandymount Strand and it forms part of the ecosystem of South Dublin Bay. It is in the heart of an area recognised as an essential resource for huge numbers of birds that converge there. In winter there are thousands of wildfowl and waders that feed along the shoreline of South Dublin.
The marsh is located along the railway line that hugs the coast at this point. Fresh water flows into the marsh and salt water flows in at high tide. There is a channel that runs from the marsh in a southerly direction for about 1 Kilometre. There is access to the marsh at the north end. Alternatively, you can walk along the main road and view the marsh through the trees. There is a carpark at the southerly end (Pay & Display) and there are a couple of gaps in the hedge where you can view the marsh. You can also follow the channel from here through Blackrock Park. Walk as far as the pedestrian bridge over the railway line and you can access Sandymount Strand from here. You can see a mix of waders and shore birds here.
Sat-Nav co-ordinates for the carpark are 53.309032, -6.196139 – VIEW MORE INFORMATION
The carpark serves the Booterstown Dart Station so you can also get here by train.
